How to add space & value to your property

With today’s property market so unpredictable and the price of moving soaring, it might make more sense to add space to your property rather than move. Not only add space but also value to your property too.

5 top tips from Craig Bees, MD Bartram&Co

Lick of paint
Might sound cosmetic but a coat of new paint (keep the colour neutral) can make a house feel clean, hygienic and cared for. While you are at it, update the front door furniture if it’s looking tired, replace any rotting window timbers or loose tiles and give the front flower beds a weed. First impressions count.

Add a conservatory
The key to a successful conservatory is to ensure that it flows from your existing rooms rather than looking as if it’s just been tacked on to the outside. A good one could add as much as 12% to the value of your home in London, 5% for the rest of the UK and give you a lot more living space

Install a new kitchen
The kitchen is what most house-hunters will look at first. Sparkling work surfaces and new appliances can woo a wavering buyer. An average new kitchen costs £8,000 and can add 6% to your property’s value, according to consumer watchdog Which?

The current trend is for open-plan living, so make sure your kitchen has a sense of space.

Add an extra bathroom
Bigger houses need more bathrooms, particularly family homes because nobody likes to queue in the morning! Make sure all your existing bathrooms are spotless, too as it sets the right tone.

Convert the garage into an office
A lot of today’s garages are no longer fit for purpose, having been designed when cars were smaller. They have become dead space and can easily be converted into another room. Before you do anything, though, find out what buyers are looking for in your area: is it houses with lots of bedrooms (families), or properties with an office (young professionals)

Trustier Than Timber, Check Out Heritage Windows

Replacing the existing windows at your home is never a simple task. The styling and aesthetics of the substitute design have to be exactly right in order to maintain the traditional character of the property, complicated even further if you’re replacing old timber windows.

There is nothing like real timber, or is there? We know that there is.

Our Heritage window range is a contemporary imitation of the original 19th Century Flush Sash Timber Window crafted from UPVC, though when you see it you’d scarcely believe it isn’t manufactured from wood.

A timber effect runs through the entire frame and it even features period hardware such as monkeytail handles for further authenticity. It’s so alike to timber in appearance that it’s often stipulated and approved in conservation areas, partly also due to the fabulous finishes on offer which are similarly associated with the 19th Century design e.g. Cotswold Biscuit, Painswick, Irish Oak.

However, whilst Heritage windows look exactly like wood, they don’t perform like it, on the contrary.

The thermal efficiency they provide far exceeds timber so it will cost considerably less to insulate your living space and they don’t need any upkeep as they’re completely maintenance-free. The occasional wipe with a wet cloth will be enough to leave them back looking their best again.

They can accommodate double glazing or triple glazing, or if you want to obscure the inside of home away from passing prying eyes you can always choose to integrate privacy glazing.

Enhanced security is another reason they triumph over timber as the frame is incredibly durable and the locking mechanism attached to each window keeps it securely fastened.

You can see examples from our Heritage range at your local West Yorkshire Windows showroom where we also showcase a raft of other high-quality home improvements.

The Horbury Show Is A Hit For West Yorkshire Windows

This past weekend several members of the West Yorkshire Windows team headed for the annual Horbury Show where we had a stall at the long-running local event.

Held on the Sunday between 11am-4.30pm, the Horbury show has been a major event in the Wakefield District calendar for over 30 years and is regularly attended by thousands of people.

With FREE entry available, it features 70 fairground attractions, classic cars and even hosts a dog show amongst many other things. It makes for a real fun day for all the family.

We used our appearance at the show to offer visitors an exclusive £250 off flyer applicable to our entire stunning range and gratefully received it was too with those seeking quality home improvements at a specially discounted rate.

Those who were unable to make it to the show will soon have an extra opportunity to come see us as work is progressing well at our new Penistone showroom which as you can see is beginning to take shape.

Upon its opening, visitors will be able to view an extensive choice of products including aluminium and Heritage windows and bi-folding doors.
