Is my home suitable for Solar Panels?

Yorkshire is particularly suitable for solar PV installations due to the local weather conditions, which are primarily influenced by the Pennine Hills. The “rain shadow” caused by the Pennines means that Yorkshire has 25% more daylight hours on average than neighbouring Manchester, and the effect continues out into the Vale of York. This tendency for clear skies means that Yorkshire out-performs Cornwall for sunny days during the winter months. Most homes across Yorkshire are suitable for a Solar PV system. However, when one of our solar experts comes to your home to discuss your project, we will be able to answer any questions you might have and survey your house for suitability at the same time.

Roof Type
Solar panels for any roof type

Type of roof for Solar Panels...

The best direction for your roof to be facing is south in order to maximise the solar energy generated, as this is the direction that receives the most sunlight. Roofs that face east and west will also give efficient outputs from your system. North-facing roofs are not as efficient but will still generate you a certain level of solar PV energy. As most roofs have two sides or more it is likely that at least one side will be facing in the right direction. Our solar expert will fully explain the outputs available, whatever the direction of your home’s roof and be able to design a system which will give you the maximum return.

The angle of your roof will make a big difference to the amount of sunlight it receives throughout the day and therefore the amount of energy that can be generated from your system. Flat roofs, as well as sloping roofs can be suitable providing the position/direction allows for enough sunlight. 30 degrees is the optimum angle for energy generation, however, other angles will be explained in your quotation.

If solar PV panels were installed onto an area of the roof that is shaded, the amount of energy that could be generated from them is affected. When installing panels onto your roof we look for shading from chimneys, trees and other buildings/properties, as these should be avoided. We will create panel layout designs that can work with all types of roofs, even if your property does suffer from shaded areas. We will ensure that your solar PV system will generate the optimum level of energy available for your home.

Planning for roof with solar panels

Planning Permission for Solar Panels

Due to the changes in permitted development rights introduced on 6th April 2008 you do not need planning permission to have solar PV systems installed on your roof. However, there are guidelines that we have to work within. Our team of experts fully understand these guidelines and will ensure that your installation complies.

What are the benefits of Solar Panels?

There are a range of both financial and environmental benefits when you opt for a Solar PV system. With the price of electricity increasing and environmental issues at the forefront of people’s minds, solar is becoming a very attractive investment opportunity. Once your Solar PV panels have been installed you can harness the free power of the sun to create electricity, this electricity can be used for free and then you only use your standard supplier in the evenings when there is no natural daylight. Therefore the bills that you receive from your energy provider are going to be cheaper, the exact amount you save will depend upon the size of your system, how much electricity you use, and when you use it.

Financial Rewards

What are the benefits of Solar Panels?

The Government backed “Feed in Tariff” means that not only do you get paid for generating your own electricity, but you’re also paid for any extra electricity that you produce and export back to the national grid. This combined with the savings you’ve made via the reductions on your bill with your standard electricity supplier means that solar makes financial sense!

Property Value

What are the benefits of Solar Panels?

As the cost of traditional fossil fuel energy is increasing homes fitted with solar PV may well become more desirable to potential purchasers because of both the financial and environmental benefits. The best financial rewards from installing a solar PV system are gained from staying in your property for 20 years, however if you were to move during this period, your Feed in Tariff benefit is transferable to the new owner and it may well make the property more attractive to a potential purchaser.

What are the benefits of Solar Panels?

Using solar power for your home energy requirements will reduce your carbon footprint and help the environment. By harnessing the suns free energy you will reduce your contribution to climate change, solar cells don’t release anything into the air, unlike traditional fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases, carcinogens and carbon dioxide. The sun is a consistent source of power source and by installing a Solar PV system you are using free, clean and renewable energy and are joining in the fight to reduce greenhouse gases and helping to make the world a greener place.

Feed in Tariff
rewards from solar panels generating electricity

What is the Feed in Tariff?

The Feed in Tariff (FIT) scheme offers guaranteed cash payments to households who produce their own electricity at home using renewable technologies such as Green Yorkshire Solar PV. The scheme launched in April 2010 to reward households and community groups in England, Scotland and Wales (but not Northern Ireland) who install their own electricity-generating ‘microgeneration’ technology with regular and guaranteed payments from the government (which are paid for through a levy on all consumers’ energy bills). There are three savings elements to the Feed in Tariff.Click the links to the left for further details.

Generation tariff

What is the Feed in Tariff?

This is a fixed-rate payable to households for the total amount of electricity generated, calculated per unit. The rate you’ll receive is determined by when you first registered to join the FIT scheme and the type and size of installation.

Export Tariff

What is the Feed in Tariff?

This is payable on the units of electricity you export back to the national grid because you haven’t used them in your own property. In the case of most small-scale the level of electricity exported is currently calculated on a 50% assumption (called a ‘deemed export’). Solar PV customers who export unused electricity back to the grid will receive 4.64p/kWh.
