Clarifying What Flush And Non-Flush Casement Windows Are

West Yorkshire Windows has one of the biggest lines of window products in the white rose county and if you browse this packed range online or in our showrooms, you will see that it includes flush and non-flush casement windows.

The word ‘flush’ is used for a casement window that has a perfectly flat surface because of its window sashes sitting completely flush with the window frame.

A ‘non-flush’ casement doesn’t have a flat surface as its window sashes marginally extend past the window frame.

If you don’t quite get what we mean, come and see both solutions and look at them from a side-on position.

Here’s some more information about them that you may find helpful.

The history of flush and non-flush casements

Flush casement windows were first created in the 19th century and would be made using wood, just like all other window styles of that era would be.

If there are any late Georgian, Edwardian or Victorian homes in your locality, you may find that some of them still have their original timber-framed flush windows.

The non-flush casement window came slightly before, developed in the 19th century. It wasn’t built from timber though. No, it was actually constructed using iron and blacksmiths were responsible for making them.

The recent revival of flush windows

Flush windows are all the fashion again and their renaissance stems from the increasing demand for windows with a different aesthetic to other designs.

Our response to that was to introduce the ‘Envisage’ range to the market.

An ‘Envisage’ window is a modern interpretation of a traditional timber flush casement window – it shares the lines and proportions that typify a classic flush casement, except that we neglect the use of wood and manufacture it with UPVC so that it offers 21st century performance.

Which of the two will be right for my home?

Flush UPVC windows are one of the very few window systems accepted by planners for properties situated in conservation areas as they acknowledge how closely aligned they are to the styling of a traditional casement window.

But they’re not just suited to historic homes and can just as easily integrate into modern abodes. You’ll see many contemporary homes that have flush windows finished in either Black or Anthracite Grey.

The non-flush casement window is such a big seller because there are hardly any house types that it won’t suit.
