Ways You Can Improve Your Home Security This Winter

How to ensure your home is properly secure

There’s often a notable rise in burglary figures from October onwards and it can be partly put down to it getting darker much earlier.

It makes sense because thieves are far more likely to try and break into someone’s home in the pitch black than in broad daylight.

The increased threat of burglary right now is why October is the chosen month for National Home Security Month

You can get some great advice on home security from the official NHSM website, and West Yorkshire Windows can offer you some too:

Ensure your home is alarmed

Here’s a staggering stat for you – only a third of UK homes have a working burglar alarm. Is it any wonder then that a home in the UK is burgled every 106 seconds?

It’s madness, especially as the average cost of a burglary can amount to £3,000!

You can have a bells-only, dialler, wireless or silent burglar alarm installed for just £200, so why would you risk going without one, or just having a dummy alarm?

The risk of your home being burgled is vastly reduced if it has a quality alarm system.

Don’t leave a spare key out

You may not be the only person who needs access to your home. But we strongly advise against leaving a spare key for anyone else under a doormat or plant pot outside.

Before they try and force their way inside, thieves will check such spots to see if they get lucky and find a key. You couldn’t even class it as a ‘break-in’ if a thief entered using a key.

It’s cheap to get a spare key cut, so do that and only pass your spare keys on to the people you most trust.

Install secure windows and doors

To keep thieves out of your house, your windows and doors need to be secure enough to see off all the tricks they try to get past them.

Give them a security test of your own. Just engage their locks and from the outside, push your windows and doors to see if they move too much when pressure gets applied.

If you’ve unconvinced by their protective abilities, invest in new double or triple glazed windows and doors, which will have a tough profile and cutting-edge locking mechanism. They won’t let you down!
